Natural Ways to Prevent Fleas on Your Pet

Fleas are horrible critters that can make the life of your pet and your family very uncomfortable. What’s more is that conventional flea treatment are ineffective and the chemical ingredients can actually have harmful effects on the health of your pet and those that come in contact with its fur.

Natural flea treatments are much healthier, cheaper and more effective, however not everything that is natural is safe for your pet so be aware of that. For example, essential oils are very effective at chasing fleas away, but these scents are very bothersome to your pets because they lick their fur and they have a sense of smell that is many times more sensitive than ours is.

The first thing to do if there is a flea problem is to make sure your house is clean and your carpets and pet’s bed is vacuumed frequently. This is important to prevent the flea eggs from hatching and re-infecting.

Apple cider vinegar is a wonderful natural flea detergent because fleas hate the smell of it. If you fill a spray bottle with apple cider vinegar and apply it to the fur of your dog or cat while combing their coat and then leave it on for 5 minutes before washing them. You can also mix apple cider vinegar with your pets shampoo and wash them with it, leave it on for 5 minutes and then rinse.

Coconut oil is a cheap and natural flea repellent that is actually very healthy for your pets skin and fur. Coconut oil contains lauric acid which is a natural flea repellent so you need to buy a natural and unprocessed coconut oil. Rub half a teaspoon of coconut oil between your palms until it becomes liquid and then apply to your pets back, legs and stomach. You can do this a few times a day or before and after your dog is going into an area that may have fleas.




Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a naturally occurring powder that is made up of the fossilised remains of hard-shelled algae. It is safe for humans and animals but it is deadly for fleas because it has microscopic sharp edges that slice through the flea’s skeleton. DE is a wonderful and easy flea treatment because all you need to do is dust your hands with the powder and rub into your pets fur once a day. You can also dust it across your pet’s bed once per week.

If you are looking for a non-invasive natural flea treatment then you need a night light and a dish filled with warm soapy water. Fleas are attracted to light so if you place the night light over the soapy water dish the fleas will leap off your pet’s fur and into the soapy water which will kill them. Do this each night until the flea problem is over.

Make sure to always wear gloves whining applying flea treatments to your pet because you do not want to risk picking up fleas yourself.
